[CASE STUDY] Hydraulic Torque Tools Used In Refinery Plant Turnaround

The old saying goes: “Time is money, and money is time.” This is certainly true for refinery and petrochemical plant shut downs, both scheduled and unscheduled.

Hydraulic torque wrenches are widely used during these times that refiners are “off line” for maintenance and upgrades. These wrenches can weigh anywhere from 10 to 80 lbs., which left one of Maxpro’s clients – an industrial contractor working for a petrochemical company in Delaware -- with a dilemma: They needed to have the wrenches calibrated, but the cost & time of packing and shipping 30 hydraulic torque wrenches from Delaware to our lab in Horsham would be too high.

Troubleshooting Your Industrial Torque Wrenches

Industrial Torque WrenchesAt Maxpro, many of the torque tool repair jobs we tackle involve tools with some obvious problem or defect.

But there are times when industrial torque wrenches can develop problems that aren’t immediately apparent. When do you need to get your torque and tensioning tools fixed?

Read our checklist to help diagnose the repair state of your tools.

The Advantages of E-RAD Torque Wrenches

The Advantages of E-RAD Torque WrenchesWind turbines require precision tools to operate, and E-RAD’s torque wrenches have become a favorite among professionals in the wind industry.

Faster than other traditional methods of bolting

Compared to hydraulic torque wrenches, E-RAD decreases tightening times by as much as 300 percent through the delivery of continuous and smooth torque. When looking for wind turbine bolting tools, look to E-RAD’s BLU Series pistol grip electronic torque wrenches.

New RAD Pneumatic Tools

RAD 1500 TransducerAt Maxpro, we sell and rent a number of different torque tools, including products from RAD Torque Systems. Today we’re going to look at three new offerings from RAD: the RAD 1500 Transducer, the RAD 30 DX-2, and the
B-Rad
Select.

RAD 1500 Transducer

The company bills this as a “complete calibration system,” able to calibrate between 75 and 1,500 ft/lbs. The system includes a static transducer, calibration stand, and a Surface tablet complete with RAD’s calibration software.

RAD’s Smart Transducers are classified to BS 7882:2008 as class 1 or better for the primary range (+/- 0.5 percent of reading from 20 to 100 percent of the full scale).

Every transducer is fully calibrated and is traceable to ISO 17025, which ensures the highest measurement of quality.

Industrial Bolting Tool Applications for the Wind Turbine Industry

Wind_turbines.jpgThe wind turbine industry is going to take off over the next few decades.

According to projections from the U.S. Dept. of Energy, total wind power capacity will increase from 113.43 gigawatts in 2020 to 404.25 gigawatts by 2050.

And that’s good news for the bolting industry, whose precision torque tools are necessary to keep wind turbines turning. There are a lot of bolts on the average wind turbine – approximately 1,500 by some counts – which means the need for precise-yet-durable tools.
